Public Support Diverges on Vouchers, Charters

(from Education Week) Opposition toward school vouchers and other policies that direct public aid toward private schools has softened in the past year, even as support for charter schools dropped 12 percent. But the findings, in new public opinion poll from Education Next, may have as much to do with word choice as with actual sentiment. Fewer participants said they supported "government funds" being used for private school tuition than those who said they believe in giving families "wider choice."

As for shrinking support for charter schools, possibilities include high-profile opposition to them from leaders including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, compounded by the White House departure of charter champion Barack Obama.
