(from Chronicle of Higher Education) How did American University of Puerto Rico, the oldest university on the island, return to operation 17 days after Hurricane Maria? "We had power and water but most students had neither," said Chancellor Rafael Ramírez-Rivera. Students helped rebuild and clean up campus. Almost 30 students associations served meals and snacks. One student in the National Guard developed a relationship with FEMA, which gave the university 6,000 meals a day. The student associations distributed the food to other school campuses. The crisis built students' character and strengthened the community, said the chancellor.
