Longstanding recess practices, like holding it after lunch and withholding it as punishment, may soon be going by the wayside. The Society of Health and Physical Educators has released new guidelines and 19 evidence-based strategies to help kids reap maximum benefits from the mid-day break. Before-lunch recess has been shown to encourage kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, for example. Schools should also establish procedures for both outdoor and indoor recess, so it's not cancelled when the weather turns inclement. No fancy equipment is needed to implement the strategies--simply adult supervision and open space.
