School's Response to Extreme Weather

(from CUPA-HR) In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey last year, Houston Community College took a number of steps to ease the pain of its students, faculty and staff. HCC set up donation sites, manned by staff and faculty volunteers, and put in place an employee disaster relief fund so individuals could easily donate to their peers and colleagues. The most severely impacted employees received up to 10 days of paid leave, and all employees received five days of paid leave when the college was closed during the storm. HR set up a disaster recovery phone hotline, which helped HCC locate and determine the well-being of staff, faculty and students; connected constituents to disaster recovery resources; assessed workforce strength immediately following the storm; and facilitated constituents' return to campus.
