School District Adopts All-Gender Bathrooms

Feb 21, 2018, 4:28 PM

(from the Leader-Telegram) All 48 public schools in the school district of Madison, Wisconsin, will soon have at least one single-stall public bathroom open to students of all genders, under a district-wide effort that also includes staff training. Similar to the family and all-access bathrooms that have become familiar in many public buildings, the all-gender bathrooms can be used by anyone, including students, visitors or family groups such as a parent with small children.

The district's policy already lets trans and non-binary students use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity, but some feel more comfortable in the private, secure all-gender bathroom. "Having this district-wide is sending a message that we recognize that we have students of many different identities, and we want to provide them with all-inclusive restrooms that are safe and available," said Karen Kepler, the district's school operations chief. "This is just good to do for all people," added Sherie Hohs, the district's social worker for LGBTQ students, "but it really is going to be essential for some of our kids."
