(from Simon Hepburn on LinkedIn) Most independent schools appear on Google Maps, the GPS mapping tool of choice among 70 percent of smartphone users. But are most schools leveraging this powerful tool to their advantage? Marketing consultant Simon Hepburn recommends six steps to make the most of Google Maps:
- Check that your school shows up. If not, visit google.com/maps, click the lines at the top left and select "add a missing place." You can then add your school and key information.
- Take control of the entry. Select the school, click "claim this entry" and provide verification.
- Ensure your details are correct. Do this at Google My Business, where you can provide additional information such as website URL, hours and photos.
- Post updates through Google My Business. You can also specify how people can respond to events and more.
- Manage your reviews. Let parents and alumni know that you welcome reviews. Follow up with positive reviewers; thank them, and ask if you can use their testimonials elsewhere. Negative or abusive comments? You may want to flag as inappropriate.
- Track your visitors. Your Google My Business page will help you get a better sense of your activity.
