(from The Atlantic) Gunshot-detection systems are among the latest technologies being installed on K-12 school campuses, joining the likes of biometric scanners, body cameras and license-plate scanners aimed at preventing shootings and other threats to student safety. These high-tech security measures — "a technological balm for a terrifying problem" — are also generating concerns that they could come at the expense of educational quality, by diverting limited funds away from programs and salaries. There are also questions about their benefits, especially when fully automated. The co-owner of one gunshot-detection system even admitted the possibility of the devices locking doors before students evacuate, potentially trapping them inside classrooms with shooters.
