Schools Brace for Bus Driver Shortage

Sep 3, 2021, 11:00 AM

(From NPR) In a new nationwide survey, half of student-transportation coordinators described their school bus driver shortages as either "severe" or "desperate." The survey found that every region of the country is currently altering transportation service due to COVID. Seventy-nine percent (79%) of respondents in the Northeast said they have altered service, 77% in the Midwest, 66% percent in the South and 80% in the West. Experts point to several reasons for the shortage, including demands for higher wages, safety concerns and a backstop of licensed drivers due to many departments of motor vehicles being closed during the pandemic.
