(from Times Union) Independent schools in New York are considering how to implement new vaccine rules, which no longer allow religious exemptions for measles, mumps and rubella vaccines that are required for enrollment. The law comes amid the largest measles outbreak in 27 years. While the change has been welcomed by many health experts, it has sparked an outcry among parents opposed to mandatory vaccination. Some educators also wonder if the change will drive more parents to home schooling, as the vaccination requirements wouldn’t apply there. Independent school leaders have approached the shift by communicating with families on the change in law and the requirement for all enrolled students to be compliant with the state’s vaccination regulations.
