(from The Wall Street Journal) More independent schools are requiring that staffers be fingerprinted, along with taking other security measures as part of a broader effort to prevent dangers including sexual misconduct and abuse. The New York Association of Independent Schools began requiring its 190 member schools to fingerprint prospective employees this school year. The initiative comes as a growing list of independent schools find themselves facing allegations of sexual abuse, sometimes stretching back decades. There are calls for even tougher preventive measures too, including in New York legislation mandating that private schools use the state education department's fingerprinting program. It costs $99 per applicant and includes checks with the FBI and the state Division of Criminal Justice Services.
