Schools Grilled for Lack of Mental Health Accommodations

Dec 21, 2018, 4:17 PM

(from Nonprofit Quarterly) When schools force students with mental illness to take leaves of absence rather than providing them the support needed to stay in school, schools violate the ADA. This practice has occurred at a number of Ivy League universities, according to a recent white paper by the Ruderman Family Foundation, which advocates for people with disabilities. One example: a student came forward with a disability and asked for a reduced course load in lieu of a leave of absence, as recommended by his psychiatrist, who indicated, “An important aspect of [the student]’s recovery is a sense of purpose.” The college denied the accommodation request, indicating it would “fundamentally alter the nature" of education there.
