(from EdTech Magazine) Families with K-12 children are expected to spend $29.5 billion on back-to-school supplies before the school year starts, according to the National Retail Federation. Electronics — and laptop and tablet computers in particular — will constitute 60 percent of that budget, including a trend in favor of "two-in-one" or "convertible" devices that combine touchscreen and keyboard options.
For independent school IT departments, this means a host of new devices on their networks. "The biggest things schools can do is test their networks before students come back," said Marie Bjerede of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN). "[M]ake sure each access point can cover as much capacity as is needed. Make sure nobody will get kicked off."
