(from EdSurge) Design Tech High School has a new home on the corporate campus of Oracle, a California-based multinational technology company with thousands of employees. Known as d.tech, the free public charter school, with 550 students in grades 9-12, was founded in 2014 and operated out of two temporary campuses prior to moving into its newly built campus at Oracle's Redwood City headquarters. Among other unique offerings, an emphasis on design runs through the entire curriculum, and students may take breaks from their core classes in "intersessions" — two-week periods held four times a year where students gain real-world experience with Bay Area businesses, including Oracle.
Many Oracle employees also work with students in classes on topics like coding and user-centered design. But there are limits to when and where Oracle staff can visit the school. Likewise, students must be accompanied by Oracle employees or school staff to visit certain parts of the Oracle campus.
