Co-ops Help Schools Save on Food Costs

(from District Administration) Schools are turning to food and purchasing cooperatives to save five to seven percent on food costs. One school in rural Minnesota, for example, struggled to find healthy and affordable options for students until joining Sourcewell, a national public service cooperative open to schools and nonprofits. The company helped the school bid for a new contract and provided a software platform that streamlines food service management called NutriStudents K-12. Co-ops can also help schools hire food service workers, assess nutritional value of meals and choose student-tested meals.
