Schools Shouldn't Opt out of This Eclipse

(from U.S. News) Today's rare solar eclipse represents a natural phenomenon so spectacular, so potentially life-changing that some schools and school districts ... are preventing students from going outside to experience it, fearing lawsuits from parents alleging damage to their children's eyes.

"When Mark Twain remarked that you should never let your schooling get in the way of your education, this was the kind of thing he had in mind," writes Andrew Rotherham. "Nature is about to put on one of its greatest shows, and too many schools are greeting it with a shocking lack of imagination and creativity. It's understandable that the ancients were terrified of eclipses. Professional educators in 2017? There is no excuse."
