(From EdWeek) With the need to switch from fossil fuels to renewables becoming ever more pressing, some schools are swapping out traditional HVAC systems for heat pumps to move energy around from one part of a school building to another, depending on which areas get the most or least heat at particular times of the day. While the up-front price tag for installing a heat pump can be in the tens of thousands of dollars, experts say the investment can save schools in the long run on heat and hot water. Maine is the latest state to set aside federal relief dollars for the adoption of heat pumps in public schools, and similar legislation has been proposed in Virginia.
