Layoffs and other cutbacks in Scotland's well-paying financial sectors, compounded by rising school fees and financial aid needs, have sent enrollment in the country's private schools to its lowest point in nearly 30 years. The decline has been most precipitous at the primary (lower school) levels, where numbers have dropped nearly 10 percent since 2007. Total enrollment nationwide hit the low of 29,647 in 2016, down from a high of 32,065 in 2007, according to the Scottish Council of Independent Schools. The organization also revealed that financial assistance amounts have doubled since the 2009/10 school year.
