(from the Chronicle of Higher Education) Following the college admissions bribery scandal that broke in March, some elite universities have pledged to make changes in athletics recruiting that will help administrators know exactly what happens to students who, according to coaches, are recruited to join teams. Yale, for example, said its athletics director would henceforth review coaches' proposed recruits before they are sent to the admissions office, and if a recruited athlete does not subsequently make a team, the situation will receive "close scrutiny." The university will also create a "code of conduct" for recruiting. The University of Pennsylvania is establishing checks and balances within each department as well as procedures to verify and audit recruitment processes for athletes. Dartmouth will formalize protocols for administrative approval of each recruit and review annually all first-year recruited athletes.
