South Carolina Court Rules Against School Vouchers

Sep 19, 2024, 1:44 PM

(From K-12 Dive) The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled 3-2 that using taxpayer dollars for private school tuition through the K-12 voucher program is unconstitutional. The ruling affects the Education Scholarship Trust Fund (ESTF), which enrolled nearly 3,000 students for the 2024-25 year, providing up to $6,000 per student. Governor McMaster plans to request a reconsideration of the decision, citing potential harm to low-income families and state-funded programs. While tuition assistance is halted, ESTF funds can still be used for tutoring and other educational services.
