Start of School Brings Wave of Scams

Sep 3, 2024, 1:33 PM

(From Forbes) The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a warning about scammers exploiting the start of the school year, pretending to be from the school’s financial aid office. Other student-focused scams include:

  • Scammers pose as the school's financial office, falsely claiming that unpaid bills will result in students being dropped from their classes.
  • Scammers offer bogus scholarships, grants or promises of student loan forgiveness, asking for personal information or upfront fees under the guise of securing these opportunities.
  • Fraudulent websites advertise heavily discounted textbooks, but after payment is made, the books are never delivered.
