(from K-12 Daily) Despite rising concerns about sun-related skin cancer, school staff in many states are still not allowed to oversee students applying sunscreen without special permission from parents or a physician, nor can students in many areas apply sunscreen while on campus or during school-related activities. This is starting to change. Maryland this spring joined a dozen other states that have required school districts to establish policies that would allow students to possess and use sunscreen at school-sponsored activities without written permission from a health care provider. The governor of Maryland himself underwent surgery earlier this year to remove skin cancer cells. The other states to pass sunscreen legislation include California, New York, Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Utah and Washington.
