(from Inside Higher Ed) As more small private college announce plans to suspend academic operations or close entirely, emerging trend lines are pointing to common vulnerabilities. Many schools are Roman Catholic, many are in the Midwest or Applachia, and all have enrollment below 1,000 students and small endowments. But while these schools' traditional operating models may no longer be viable, the institutions are moving ahead in some creative ways, and more quickly than many larger schools might do. "The history and the Catholic identity of many of our institutions gives them some tools to be more flexible in how they respond," said Paula Moore, vice president for external affairs at the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. For instance, they can identify economies of scale by working with other schools, such as merging or selling campus assets.
