(From Inside Higher Ed) In many communities, the competitive nature of the college application process leaves many students feeling inadequate because their college goals don't include attending the most prestigious of institutions. Highly competitive Palo Alto High School took a stand by killing a tradition of printing a map showing graduating seniors' college destinations in the school newspaper. "[T]he map contributes to the toxic, comparison-driven culture at [PAHS]," wrote the PAHS newspaper's five co-editors-in-chief in an editorial announcing the decision. In another editorial they wrote, "[T]here’s more to being human than achievement — we think the drive for traditional measures of validation can force students to miss some of the most valuable lessons and experiences high school can offer."
