(From Inside Higher Ed) The Supreme Court announced in a 5-4 decision that the Trump administration cannot end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provides protection against deportation and work authorization for hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. The majority opinion held that the administration didn't provide an adequate reason for ending the program.
The decision comes as schools prepare to reopen for summer and fall instruction. With a staff, nurse and bus driver shortage, along with predictions some staff will choose to stay home or retire early, a decision to repeal the program would have impacted thousands of educators, and many more students. Education groups largely praised the Supreme Court’s decision but also called for congressional action to protect Dreamers, as the ruling took issue with how the administration was trying to phase out DACA but did not weight in on the legality of the program itself.
