(from The New York Times) Some advocates for school choice saw a Supreme Court ruling issued Monday as a "game changer" in the debate over publicly funded vouchers for private schools. The nation's highest court ruled in favor of a church-run preschool in Missouri that had applied for $20,000 in publicly funded tire scraps for its playground. (Missouri is one of 39 states with strict prohibitions on public funds going to religious schools.) In his majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, "the exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise qualified, solely because it is a church, is odious to our Constitution...."
The court also sent three cases related to school choice back to state courts for reconsideration. In one such case, the court effectively vacated a 2015 decision by the Supreme Court of New Mexico that ruled against providing public funds for textbooks in religious and private schools.
