(from ERS) Declining or relatively stagnant salaries in most states are making it increasingly difficult for school districts to attract and retain good teachers, according to a new analysis by ERS, a national nonprofit that partners with public school leaders. Inflation-adjusted compensation for public school teachers atually declined in 39 states between the 2009-2010 and 2015-2016 school years. Teacher salaries today are between 14 and 25 percent less than the pay in other professions available to college graduates. These values declined most in states that cut per-pupil funding — states which also average a teacher turnover rate or 15.8 percent, 40 percent higher than states with average teacher salaries more thnan 10 percent above the living wage.
