Teachers Help Teachers Improve Blended Learning

(from Blended Learning Universe) The Diocese of Orange County has developed a fellowship to improve blended learning within its schools by connecting early adopters to other teachers. In the ABLE (Advancing Blended Learning Education) program, teachers apply to be fellows, and those selected receive intensive training in blended learning and coaching strategies. Each fellow is then assigned to coach three or four teachers at another school within the diocese. Fellows establish personalized instructional goals aimed at improving blended and personalized instruction, and measure progress toward those goals. Program directors pass along three lessons:

  1. Define your school/district’s blended-learning emphasis to two or three goals.
  2. Don’t undersell the importance of administration to maintaining program momentum.
  3. Provide opportunities for fellows to collaborate, especially when they encounter road blocks.
  4. It’s all about relationships - encourage communication beyond fellows' site visits.
