Academic rigor, an emphasis on "deep content" and testing for mastery and matriculation built BASIS Independent Schools into a highly regarded chain of 27 schools (private, public charters and international) — but also high attrition rates for first-year students. The chain has since reduced that attrition through academic and programming adjustments "to make success achievable for the average student," according to its vice president of academics. Among other distinctions, the school evaluates teachers based on student performance, pays them bonuses "for good work" and provides them with a professional support network involving fellow teachers nationwide.
