The "Feel Great" Case for Motivating Employees

(from the Harvard Business Review) In the carrot-versus-stick approach to motivating employees, a leader's sole task can become compliance, or trying to compel others to do something. A better approach might be to make them feel great about their work, which can lead to meaningful dialog about it. Four tips:
Share context and provide relevance.

  • Anticipate roadblocks to enable progress.
  • Recognize contributions and show appreciation.
  • Check in to assess your own motivation.
The bottom line: talk with your team about the relevance of the work they do every day. Connect with your own motivation, and share it freely.
