The Power of Student-Driven Learning

Nov 26, 2017, 5:17 PM

(from George Couros’ blog) "You can be engaged without being empowered, but if you are empowered, you are definitely engaged. Those that are empowered create the(ir) future and do not sit back and wait for it to happen to them," writes George Couros, author of "The Innovator's Mindset." Couros lays out three myths about empowerment in schools: it's a free-for-all; it's disconnected from the curriculum and students are becoming entitled. Couros, an educator, learner and consultant, found that by turning over curriculum objectives to students, he was still able to meet the school's curriculum objectives, but his students had a much better understanding of each objective. He also found success with individualized learning and believes that empowering students will lead to the opposite of entitlement.
