Three Compliance Issues For 2020

Jan 6, 2020, 1:32 PM

(From Liebert Cassidy Whitmore) New laws announced in 2019 signal what systemic compliance issues independent school business leaders might prioritize in 2020. Alysha Stein-Manes, counsel of Liebert Cassidy Whitmore, recommends three areas of focus for the coming year:

  1. Audits. From the FLSA's overtime exemption to the FHEA nondiscrimination amendments, new policy and labor regulations are slated to take effect in January. Has your school taken the time to examine current practices in regard to these updates?
  2. Hiring and succession planning. Independent schools seeking to recruit and retain millennials should consider flexible scheduling and a telework policy, suggests Stein-Manes.
  3. Social media in the workplace, free speech and expression, employee privacy, and electronic use policies. As technology and the world of social media evolve, business leaders would do well to review their electronic use policies and practices to ensure that they are compliant with ever these evolving areas of the law, advises Stein-Manes.
