(from EDspaces Insights) Today's nationwide school walkout to stop gun violence, held on the 19th anniversary of the killings of 13 people at Columbine High School, coincides with growing scrutiny of schools' safety protocols. Three areas to focus on with the built environment are architecture, technology and operations.
- Architecture includes well-defined perimeters for the campus, buildings and classrooms, along with design elements that support natural surveillance and discourage easy access.
- Technology includes the ability to remotely monitor and control doors, and training to ensure that staff tasked with monitoring the technology can do so.
- Operations includes communications, information sharing and situational awareness involving campus activities. A key element is communications protocols and technologies to transmit information in real time.
