(From K12 Dive) With schools becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, a recent report by K12 Security Information Exchange called for greater public disclosure of these incidents. To improve your organization’s cybersecurity response plan, experts at National School Public Relations Association recommend schools take the following actions:

  • Develop a plan for communicating that information with families and staff in case schools are shut down or a student data system is hacked.
  • Communicate immediately what happened, how the school is responding, who is affected by the incident and how the school will notify those impacted as more information comes out.
  • When an incident is over, be transparent about the financial consequences of a ransomware attack.
