(from CFO) As the costs associated with data breaches continue to grow, organizations must be vigilant in looking for ways to reduce their exposure. Two lessons that schools may want to consider.
Destroy records of past customers (families, students, employees). You can't lose data if you don't have it. In the event of breach, you may have to notify and offer credit monitoring to all affected individuals.
Reconsider whether you need all those physical mailing addresses. If you have the snail-mail address of someone whose data has been compromised, you may be required to notify them via physical, written notifications. Those costs add up quickly.
