Tips for Responding to Anonymous Complaints

Jul 11, 2022, 11:46 AM

(from Schwartz Hannum PC) Independent schools are receiving an increasing number of anonymous complaints from members of their community, including staff, faculty, students, parents and alumni. it is important for independent schools to emphasize their commitment to take seriously all complaints they receive and respond in a meaningful way that is proper under the given circumstances. Best practices include:

  • Involve legal counsel at the earliest possible stage.
  • Determine if alleged misconduct is a violation of law and/or school policies and expectations.
  • Determine if you can communicate with those in complaint.
  • Determine who will lead the response and who should know about the complaint.
