In fact, an analysis of 5,825 new executive appointments by S&P Global found that not only did female CEOs outperform their male counterparts, but boards with greater gender diversity were more profitable as well. To support and retain women in nonprofit leadership positions, experts recommend the following practices:

  • Showcase female leaders to encourages individuals just starting out in their careers to set their sights high.
  • Provide clear career paths to ensure women have access to mentors and programs that help them chart out a course for future leadership.
  • Create regular opportunities for managers and peers to provide constructive, actionable feedback in a timely manner.
  • Offer family-friendly benefits such as paid maternity leave, backup childcare and other benefits that can  empower employees to excel.
