Training Schools' First Responders: Teachers

Oct 17, 2018, 12:47 PM

(from ASCD) In the wake of last school year's school shootings, suggested prevention efforts have been numerous, including new security equipment and mental-health services, calls to arm teachers, bulletproof whiteboards and metal detectors, and increased police presence. Founders of the Educator's School Safety Network argue that what's missing is ongoing training for educators, who are the first responders to every kind of school-related disaster. Equally important is a comprehensive, well-reasoned -- not reactive -- response to school safety. They emphasize that the issue is much bigger than preparing against active shooter events: "If every gun in the world disappeared today, you would still have school safety problems," they said.
