Trends in Chinese Students' Enrollments Abroad

Oct 15, 2018, 1:46 PM

(from ICEF Monitor) With average annual growth of 9 percent over the last 20 years, the number of Chinese students abroad has more than doubled since 2010 alone with over 600,000 going overseas to study in 2017. The Beijing Overseas Study Service Association says schools should look for four trends to impact future enrollments--and for more students younger than 18 to be studying abroad.

  1. Families from a greater range of incomes, not just senior management, are sending their children abroad.
  2. Chinese students are exploring options in more countries outside the traditional "favorites" of the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia.
  3. While 57 percent of Chinese students use an agent to enroll, other marketing channels are growing more important.
  4. Most--80 percent--of Chinese families carefully consider the quality of their agent counselor, so working with a well-vetted agency is critical.
