Trustees Fear for the Future of Higher Ed

Feb 3, 2020, 10:06 PM

(From Inside Higher Ed) More than 40% of trustees are now very concerned about the future of higher education, up 14 points from last year, according to to a new survey released by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) and conducted by Gallup. Financial stability and tuition price were the top reported sources of anxiety, with little difference between public and private institutions, followed by public perception of the value of a college degree. Other notable findings:

  • The share of trustees indicating they were somewhat or very concerned rose from about 74% in 2018 to about 84% in 2019.
  • While only 23% of trustees said they thought the general public has an accurate understanding of the current student debt situation in the country, 83% felt that university administrators accurately understand the situation.
  • While 59% of trustees said the admissions process is fair, 64% of trustees agree or strongly agreed that applicants who have wealthy parents are more likely to gain acceptance to selective colleges or universities.
