(from WUSA 9) As if schools don't face enough health and safety concerns regarding artificial turf fields, now add the potential for them being "too hard." Authorities in Washington, D.C., recently shut down or restricted the use of 16 of 52 city-run artificial turf fields because of potential dangers caused by the the turf becoming so hard that it could put students at greater risk of concussions and other injuries. All 16 fields failed a hardness test called GMAX. In repairing or replacing the fields, the city is using another type of artificial material, though many parents are pushing for real grass out of concerns for carcinogen exposure.
