Venerable Private Schools Leverage Global Enrollment Boom

Apr 16, 2019, 11:44 AM

(from The Economist) The opening in September 2020 of Westminster Chengdu will represent the first of six Chinese expansions by the venerable Westminster School, founded in 1560 by Queen Elizabeth I. Through a venture with Hong Kong Melodious Education Technology Group that will stretch over the next 10 years, Westminster will eventually educate 20 times as many children in China as in the heart of London.

It's one of many examples of how enrollment in private schools is rising internationally, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Factors driving the increase include rising incomes and falling birthrates, a growing emphasis on education amid declining opportunities for less well-educated people, a rising supply of teachers in emerging economies, and the impact of technology in creating demand for new schools and facilitating distance education.
