Volunteering Appeals More than Protesting to College Students

(From RealClear Education) Interest in politics among college students is appreciably lower compared to those entering college in the 1960s, and students say they have little interest in protests and demonstrations, according to six decades of data from UCLA's Higher Education Institute (HERI). For instance, in a survey of incoming college freshman, conducted at over 200 colleges and universities, only 6% of respondents on average said that there is a "very good chance" that they will participate in student protests or demonstrations.

On the other hand, students today are more interested in volunteer or community service work when compared to those in earlier eras. Nearly 35% of respondents said there was a "very good chance" they will engage in community service work, according to the HERI. Compared to data from 1990, that's an increase of almost 118%.
