What's Driving Increased Hiring of Presidents of Color?

(From Inside Higher Ed) Earlier this spring, Inside Higher Ed published data showing that colleges and universities had hired significantly more presidents and chancellors of color in the year and a half after the death of George Floyd. In a recent podcast, researchers Lorelle L. Espinosa and Eddie Cole broke down the data and outlined two potential drivers of this change:

  • The proliferation of leadership development programs, coupled with large numbers of retirements over the past several years.
  • An uptick in presidents coming out of student affairs  as compared to the traditional pathways out of academic leadership — with backgrounds in financial management, fundraising and faculty relations.
