(from NBOA) On June 22, President Trump extended and expanded an executive order, first issued in April, to limit new visas. The order suspends further issuance of H-1B visas through the end of the year. This may impact independent schools that hire teachers who are not permanent residents of the U.S., as this is the visa typically used for those hires. The new order does not affect previously issued H-1Bs, which generally last for three years (with a potential three-year extension). It appears that the order does not interfere with the ability of H-1B visa holders to reenter the U.S., meaning faculty and staff traveling home over the summer should be able to return to campus. This order also suspends J-1 visas. While most international students at independent schools are on an F-1 visa, some schools may have students on J-1 exchange student visas.
