Youth Baseball Fraud Highlights Need for Internal Controls

Oct 23, 2018, 12:14 PM

(from Nonprofit Quarterly) Former board member and treasurer of an Ohio youth baseball league has been charged with embezzling more than $180,000 from the league. The alleged perpetrator, a CPA, is said to have used the funds on a Disney vacation among other personal expenses. Other board members began looking into the matter when vendors complained of not receiving payment. Theft "often  involves individuals who are widely respected and valued within the organization,” a report from the Ohio attorney general says. “Often there is no rational explanation, other than perhaps greed.” This highlights the importance of all board members having financial literacy and reviewing financial information.
