Long-Range Financial Modeling

The NBOA Long-Range Financial for Independent Schools is an easy-to-use, customizable 10-year budget model, operated through an Excel spreadsheet. In partnership with The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), the model was updated and re-released in 2020 to support both day and boarding schools.

In addition to learning from a variety of curated resources including videos, articles, recorded webinars, case studies and discussion boards, you will establish a national learning community of peers with whom you can continue to explore the concepts discussed in the course and stay connected throughout your independent school careers. This network will be beneficial as you:

  • Learn the benefits of long-range financial modeling and how it may be used to guide decisions as part of long-range planning at your school.
  • Experiment with the modeling tool and receive instructions on loading the model and the assumptions users will need to make to use the tool effectively.
  • Practice using the reporting and graphing tools to develop a presentation for the head of school, finance committee or other administrators, and have an opportunity to chat with the instructors to clarify any remaining questions.

This course is offered in partnership with One Schoolhouse.

Course Schedule

Week 1

Introduction to Long-Range Financial Modeling, Loading and Testing the Model

Learn about the benefits of financial modeling and the genesis of NBOA's tool. Participants will be introduced to and given NBOA's Long-Range Financial Model, as well as learn how the parameters for the model's assumptions were developed. Participants are required to load their school's data into the model and upload a copy for the facilitators to review. Participants will then use their school's data to see how changes to the assumptions impact their school's long-term budget planning.

Week 2

Presenting the Model and Further Customization

Participants will learn how to use the reporting tools in the model and receive tips on how to enhance their reporting to their head, finance committee and trustees, using the data generated. To earn the badge for the week, participants must either demonstrate the model to someone at their school and post a short synopsis of the meeting, or schedule a half-hour meeting with one of the instructors to have their questions answered and get assistance with customizing their model to meet their school's needs.
