Employee Supervision & Management in Independent Schools

Effective supervision is a key part of leading and managing a team and essential to the success of your school’s delivery of its mission. A good manager understands the basics of supervision and knows how to assess and ensure strong performance from direct reports while complying with legal obligations related to performance management, employee leave, hiring and communications. A great manager understands the most effective ways to develop and motivate personnel and to manage conflict while building trust and a culture of belonging. In this interactive workshop you will:

  • Learn the fundamental elements of employee supervision.
  • Recognize potential legal pitfalls related to hiring, performance management and separations.
  • Identify situations in which employees may be entitled to legally protected leave or accommodations.
  • Discover ways to foster a culture of belonging in your department.

Learning Objective(s): Participants will learn about best practices in personnel management and supervision, as well as legal risks and mitigation strategies for hiring, performance management and terminations.

With 20 years of human resources-related experience, Amber Stockham, SPHR, brings expertise in regulatory compliance, talent acquisition and management, organizational planning, and compensation and benefits design to her role as director, human resources programs at NBOA. Prior to joining NBOA in 2020, her career spanned a variety of industries, including social services, manufacturing and construction. She found a passion for education when she served as the director of human resources at Miss Hall’s School, an independent day/boarding school for girls in grades 9-12 in Massachusetts. In her current role, Stockham develops and delivers highly practical and engaging programs, products and services on topics ranging from difficult conversations and employee supervision to benefits administration. Stockham holds a master of business administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
