Essentials of Human Resources for Independent Schools

In this workshop, learn the essentials of HR practices in independent schools. Participants will learn the importance of job descriptions and their role in risk management and employee retention. This workshop will discuss classifying and paying employees and best practices to ensure benefit program compliance even in a small business office. Finally, participants will examine policies and procedures for hiring, performance management and separations to ensure they are both meeting their legal obligations to employees and practicing good risk management in this crucial area of school operations.

Learning Objective(s):

  • Learn about employee classifications, including when a person may be an independent contractor and which bona fide employees are eligible for overtime.
  • Discover best practices for benefits administration.
  • Discuss human resources procedures and how risk management can be integrated into practices that are often driven by school culture.

With 20 years of human resources-related experience, Amber Stockham, SPHR, brings expertise in regulatory compliance, talent acquisition and management, organizational planning, and compensation and benefits design to her role as director, human resources programs at NBOA. Prior to joining NBOA in 2020, her career spanned a variety of industries, including social services, manufacturing and construction. She found a passion for education when she served as the director of human resources at Miss Hall’s School, an independent day/boarding school for girls in grades 9-12 in Massachusetts. In her current role, Stockham develops and delivers highly practical and engaging programs, products and services on topics ranging from difficult conversations and employee supervision to benefits administration. Stockham holds a master of business administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
